erraticonstilts: (mindless self indulgence)
[personal profile] erraticonstilts
finally! i've been working on this since like, january, and it is now complete. special thanks to [ profile] nokomis305 for encouraging me and providing an excellent starting point :D

This is Mindless Self Indulgence (more easily referred to as MSI):

From left to right: Jimmy (vocals, programming, mastermind), Lyn-Z (bass), Steve (guitar, backup vocals), and Kitty (drums).

MSI formed in NYC in 1997/98, out of their disdain for the current stagnant music scene. They are very reticent with personal information and like to fuck with interviewers and give bullshit/facetious answers, especially in regards to their formation (interviewer: How did the four of you come together as a band? Jimmy: By rubbing ourselves simultaneously.), which makes it difficult to piece together their history. Before forming Mindless, Jimmy released a solo album titled Mindless Self-Indulgence and kept the name for his band. He was then joined by Steve, Kitty, and original bassist Vanessa YT. Vanessa left the band in 2001 to "become an astronaut"/"pursue a career in discount surgery for people looking to break into amputee pornography." Following her departure, Lyn-Z auditioned and became the new bassist.

The band used to be on a major label, but they left because they felt the label did not know how to market them. Since then, they've done a lot of self-promotion and have been releasing their music independently and on smaller labels. They do things the way they want to do them, and it works.

MSI are known for their energetic, raucous, insane live shows. They are very intense and like to do crazy shit. Jimmy has been known to drink his own piss and was once arrested for pulling out his dick and setting his pubes on fire; Steve fractured his hip and had to have hip replacement surgery; and Lyn-z had a collapsed lung and dislocated her knee. They've thrown chairs from balconies and lit their clothes on fire, and have been banned from various venues due to their antics. They enjoy taunting and making fun of the audience, and they go very far to provoke them and elicit a reaction. Jimmy even asks people to insult him, and they often get things thrown at them. During the song "Faggot," they always bring someone (or a few someones) on stage, usually people who are dressed in some sort of costume.

Perhaps more than anything, they want to entertain you and give you something you've never seen before.

They also really appreciate their fans and make a point to hang out after shows, signing things and taking pictures, and just spending time with the fans.

Musically, their style is self-described "industrial jungle pussy punk". They bring in elements of many different styles of music to create their own unique sound. They are not for the easily offended and are definitely a love them or hate them band. Their lyrics are often outrageous and inflammatory and frequently controversial and misunderstood. They've been accused of being mysoginistic, sexist, homophobic, racist, and various other false things. They don't take themselves seriously, and they're all about having fun and doing whatever the fuck you want.

James Euringer, aka Little Jimmy Urine. He was born on September 7, 1969 in New York City. He was ignored in school but overall had a good childhood. He likes comic books, movies, and video games and is an art school dropout. He admires entertainers like Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. He's very open about his sexuality and enjoys the company of, as he puts it, anyone who makes his dick hard.

He and Steve grew up together and have a side project called The Left Rights. They released an album in 2002 which features forty songs about poo.

Jimmy enjoys doing crazy shit on stage.

He likes to wear costumes

and clothes that fans throw on stage.

He will take off his own clothes

and has no problem getting naked.

He enjoys getting personal with the audience

and will make out with people after the show for a dollar.

Jimmy is married to Chantal Claret, lead singer of the band Morningwood. They are ridiculous and adorable together.

Steve, Righ?, possibly born Steve Montano. He says he was popular in school because of all the crazy shit he did. Steve also went to art school. He's an Anglophile. He's very sarcastic and, imo, hilarious.

Steve needs no pants.

Steve and his partner, Lucinda, who is British. She and Steve have a daughter, Violet, born on May 8, 2009.

Kitty, born Jennifer Dunn on August 1, possibly in Ohio. Kitty and Jimmy met while she was studying art at the School of Visual Arts in New York. She was originally intended to be a temporary member of the band but ended up becoming permanent.

She's a self-professed geek who loves books, science fiction, and video games, and she's the goody two shoes of the band (although that's not saying much :P). She's a talented singer and sings on a few tracks on If.

Kitty's boyfriend (with the rest of the MSI wives).

Lindsey Ann Ballato, aka Lyn-Z. She was born on May 21, 1976 in Dunoon, Scotland and grew up in Connecticut. In school, she was a shy, nerdy art girl. She moved to New York to study art at the Pratt Institute but dropped out after two years. She once had a shaved head.

Lyn-Z basically learned to play the bass for her audition. She knew she wouldn't get in on her bass playing skills alone, so she hid a small canister of Bacardi 151 in her bra and glued a strike pad to the head of her bass. During a break in "Tornado," she downed the Bacardi, lit a match, and blew fire over the practice space. Basically, she's more badass than you.

Lyn-Z admits to not being a very good bass player and instead chooses to focus on the performance aspect, which she excels at. The backbend is her signature move and a demonstration of her extreme flexibility, which lends itself to amazing performances. She's very dynamic and energetic on stage, with, like the rest of the band, little regard to personal safety, and she commands attention.

She tends to crowdsurf a lot and jump off of things, no matter how high.

One of her nicknames is (the) Zoid.

She is the only member of the band with any tattoos. She is not, contrary to numerous articles claiming otherwise, Jimmy's sister.

Lyn-Z is married to Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance. They have a daughter together, Bandit, born on May 27, 2009.

She was in a Dolly Parton punk cover band prior to joining MSI, called Beg Yer Parton, and she is rumored to have had a long-term girlfriend before getting with Gerard. I choose to believe this is true.

She's also the most gorgeous woman I've ever seen in my life.

2013: How I Learned To Stop Giving A Shit And Love Mindless Self Indulgence

Outburn (2000): I don't think Jimmy gives one serious answer.

Outburn (2003): long interview that demonstrates how difficult it is to get MSI to give a straight answer.

Black Velvet (2008): nice, long interview.

Crusher (2008): straight answers!

Kerrang (2008): interview with Lyn-Z.

Rock Sound (2008): long interview with the whole band.

Drum! (2008): interview with Kitty, gives a lot of backstory.

Metal Hammer (2008): interview with the whole band.

Metal Hammer (2008): the band responds to bs questions.

Kerrang (2009): interview with Jimmy and Steve.

XK: Steve and Jimmy being hilarious.

Tasteit TV: interview in which they all give serious answers! For the most part.

Rock Sound: interview with Lyn-Z and Steve.

Dsire Music/LA Youth part 2: nice interview with Jimmy.

Tasteit TV part 2: greatest Lyn-Z interview ever.

Kerrang: A little bit with Steve's aunt about her inability to poo while he was staying with her, ahaha.

Tornado: I sneak up and hit you like a fuckin' tornado / You ain't no operator so who the fuck are you then? - One of their most popular songs. I don't think they've ever not played this at a show.

Molly: She was a good girl and it felt great to be a liar

Bitches: Bitches love me 'cause they know that I can rock / Bitches love me 'cause they know that I can rhyme / Bitches love me 'cause they know that I can fuck / Bitches love me 'cause they know that I'm on time / Throughout the projects - Making fun of the typical subject matter of hip hop and rap songs.

Dicks Are For My Friends: Dicks are for my friends when they come to my house

Faggot: I been denied all the best ultrasex - Kitty describes it as a gay anthem; it's about being yourself.

I Hate Jimmy Page: Bite the future and fuck the past / My whole shit will never last - This song is not actually about hating Jimmy Page; it's about how so many bands today just rehash the same old same old from past bands.

Kill The Rock: If I'm so wonderful then why am I so misunderstood? / Everybody has a reason for it except me

Capitol P: I don't want to be the one who's stuck with me when I whip my meat out - One of several songs of theirs about sex.

Shut Me Up: I like my coffee black just like my metal - Pretty much if you only like one song by MSI, it's this one.

Stupid MF: You stupid motherfucker - This song's pretty self-explanatory.

Bullshit: After this the rest is all bullshit

Lights Out: Punch your lights out hit the pavement / That's what I call entertainment

Get It Up: I wanna make some babies / I wanna get it on / I wanna make you horny / But I can't get it up

Mark David Chapman: It doesn't matter what is said or how we say it / Coincidentally, we all sound exactly the same - MSI's view of the current music scene (they're not exactly fans). This was helped written by the fans in a "Choose Your Own Adventure" style, in that Jimmy would put up choices online, and whatever they chose, he'd have to make work in the song. That's Jimmy's mom berating him in Spanish, haha.

I leave you with the disclaimer from the inside cover of Frankenstein Girls, which nicely sums them up:
"Warning! You must listen to this album with your tongue planted firmly in your cheek. If you don't have a sense of irony, or you are a piece of shit bigot, or a fundamentalist anything, return this album immediately, don't come to our shows, don't wear our t-shirts. Fuck off. If you're a parent who neglects, beats, or doesn't show your child love, know that we don't condone violence so don't waste our time in court while you try to explain to a jury how our music made your 'happy & normal' child into a deranged lunatic. Thank you very much."

Just one correction..LynZ was born on May 22, 1979..not 1976.:)

From: [identity profile]
i think it actually is 1976. i've seen people say both, but an issue of kerrang that came out before her birthday in 2008 said she was 31, and that's the only time i've come across it in print, so i'm going with that.

This is a most excellent primer. I'm not that much into MSI, but I like ~knowing stuff, so this really helped.

Also, Lyn-Z is hands down the prettiest person ever, ugh.

thank you! and that really is the point of this, to make people aware of things about them, so i'm glad it worked for you.

This pushes all my buttons thank you!

Miss Zed was indeed born in '76. I know the two years have been floating about for awhile and i was never sure but i have it on pretty good authority that it is '76.

Lucinda is indeed British and is infact from my neck of the woods in the Midlands. The Black country aka Wolverhampton. Weird fucking world!

I would so like to believe the long term girlfriend rumor regarding Zed but idk. I think the most recent ex is a chap and is still quite involved with the goings on of MSI and whatnot. Im not sure but its a feeling i have...and from lurking and seeing him about boards, how he and others interact. But idkaaaaaaay like i say.

But this is epic win, thank you!

okay, that's really what i thought, so thank you. idk where 1979 came from; i've only ever seen it mentioned by people on lj and such.

haha, that's pretty awesome!

yeah, i figured that was just a rumor, but i thought i'd include it anyway. i don't really visit the message boards, so i'll take your word for it. you definitely have more reasoning than i do :P

thank you for the info! also, your icon wins :D

Excellent primer. It's nice to see a good size section on Kitty. I think she sometimes gets overlooked because she's behind the kit because she isn't a "flashy" drummer.

From: [identity profile]
thank you! i think that's why she tends to get overlooked, as well. there's also not all that much info out about her (what i included in here is pretty much all i could find), so that might have something to do with it.

Thanks for the links to those articles. I didn't even know some of them existed. It's good to read articles done before they became well-known :D

Just a question though: Why aren't they allowed to play Panty Shot live anymore??? Do you know the exact reason?

From: [identity profile]
thank you! and i didn't either, before i started doing research for this. those articles are really interesting; they give the funniest answers :D

i think because it's so offensive? or ~controversial or whatever. i can't find a source where anyone in the band has said this, it's just what i've read various places, from other people. so, i guess it's possible it isn't true (although i haven't heard otherwise), but they definitely haven't played it in years.
