erraticonstilts: (my chemical romance)
[personal profile] erraticonstilts
i'm back! and now,
after landing in chicago, i headed to the hotel to check in and such, and then took the train downtown and met up with [livejournal.com profile] limmenel (who is super fantastic, btw) in front of the art institute. we decided to check out the clandestine store, but it was closed! i knew it kept weird hours but i was hoping thursday was one of the days it was open. i got to see inside; it's really tiny. we took some pictures:

the hours weren't posted anywhere, so i didn't bother trying again the next day.

then we went to this gourmet cupcake place that [livejournal.com profile] limmenel had looked up. we both wanted the double chocolate, but they were out so i got a cafe au lait cupcake, which was pretty tasty. it tasted kind of like tiramisu. we talked a lot about bandom and stuff, fics that we had both read. i got to talk about fic with someone in rl! it was so exciting :D after that we headed to the theater; i think we got there around 3:30. we chatted with some people in line (including two girls who were fourteen and fifteen; i definitely thought they were at least seventeen. i mean, i didn't go to intense concerts when i was that young) who were all really nice. the skeleton crew street team took a pic of us. i saw a girl in line who was wearing a red shirt that said "die. slow." lol. they let us into the venue a little before five; cameras were prohibited, so i stuck mine in the front of my pants. i ended up in a male security guard's line so he didn't pat me down, just made me turn around, so i was able to sneak it in. while waiting to go into the actual theater part limmenel and i both bought a mikey fuckin way shirt! idk when i'm going to wear it (not at home, my parents would not be pleased), but it's awesome.

finally they opened the doors; limmenel and i linked arms with the brother and sister we met in line and everyone ran down to the front. we were pretty close, on the left side (frank's side!), but right away people started pushing. i was already sweaty and squished before the first act came out. i did, however, have a very nice view of matt cortez. first up was david costa (who i guess is signed to skeleton crew). he wasn't bad, but i'm not really into rap so i didn't care. next was drive by, who were okay. every time the lead singer spoke between songs he mentioned mcr to get people to yell, which was kind of annoying. meanwhile the pushing was getting progressively worse. then came billy talent, who i really enjoyed! the lead singer has tons of energy; he was enjoyable to watch (uhh, what i could see of him. the pushing was getting pretty insane by this point). near the end of their set limmenel got crowd surfed out of the pit, which i don't blame her for. never in my life have i been so thankful that i'm tall; i can't imagine enjoying the show if i were short.

finally mcr came out, and i didn't think it was possible but the pushing/being squished got even worse. seriously, during the opening acts i was already forced to be very intimate with the people in front of and behind me (like, pressed against them head to toe, crotch to ass and everything), and that somehow intensified. i was about three rows away from the barrier, and i was being shoved to the left, then to the right, wasn't able to stand up straight (or at all, sometimes), stepping on people's feet. people were falling down (and actually being helped back up), and i could only catch occasional glimpses of the band. i tried to sing but was having trouble breathing, so after a couple songs i moved back in the crowd and the show got a lot better. i could see! and breathe! and so, sing. throughout the show i got closer and closer, about seven rows from the front, and it wasn't quite as bad as earlier. i started off on frank's side and ended up dead center, right in front of gerard!

speaking of gerard, he is amazingly pretty in person. he was wearing the jean jacket with the burn holes and buttons, and on the back of it is the skull/snake design that's on the tour shirts. after a few songs he took it off and i got to see his lovely, lovely arms. i don't care how pale he is, he looks amazing! for both shows i ended up watching gerard most of the time. he's so dynamic on stage, it's practically impossible to look away. his dancing and hip shaking and flaily arms and crazy facial expressions, i love it all!

frank also looked really fucking hot. the first night he was wearing a dark gray (i think) collared shirt over a longsleeve light gray shirt and jeans, and the next night he wore that reddish (at least, it looked red) shirt with the yellow stripes, like so. he pretty much rocked the fuck out; not throwing himself down on the stage, but i got to see plenty pornface, so i was happy ;)

i was able to see a lot of mikey! it was nice to see him so energetic, and not with slicked back hair. it was hanging in his face, which i kind of like haha. he was of course wearing his mikey fuckin way shirt.

i didn't see much of ray. even though i was on his side the second night, i had a clearer view of gerard. his hair is INSANE, really long and in his face.

bob is so intense when he plays, it's awesome. he had one white sock on and one green striped (the other, i assume, was on his wrist). the lady locks were a-flowing, haha.

here's the setlist from the first night. i know the first six and last four songs are in the right order, but i'm not sure about the rest:
this is how i disappear

the sharpest lives
i don't love you
welcome to the black parade video (not mine)
headfirst for halos video part 2 (not mine)

kill all your friends video video (amazing quality!) (not mine)

i never told you what i do for a living

teenagers video (not mine)
i'm not okay (i promise) video (not mine)

cancer video (not mine)
vampires will never hurt you (just the beginning)
give 'em hell kid
helena video (not mine) (you can see some frank/ray interaction and the ninja headband around gerard's neck.)
they also played some bob dylan song, idk which one it was. it was desolation row!

points of interest:
-before teenagers, matt cortez (i think) lit frank's cigarette for him. at one point frank started laughing at something, so he was smoking and smiling and playing at the same time, and it was both hot and adorable. also, during one of the verses while he wasn't playing, he leaned against an amp and let his cigarette dangle between his fingers, and oh my god it was sexy.
-during a break between one song, something funny happened (i think james dewees might have dropped something? he came out from behind the keyboard to pick something up, it looked like) and frank started cracking up. he pointed it out to mikey and went over and told matt cortez what happened :D he also smiled adorably at people he threw water bottles to.
-i almost started crying during vampires, idk why. i mean, i guess it was because it was a stripped down version and the way gerard was like, moaning into the mic. idk, it was incredible. here's a video (not mine).
-cancer was amazing; it was just gerard and james on the keyboard. they took a little break after this, and gerard came back out with a cigarette for vampires.
-during kill all your friends gerard hit himself in the face lol.
-early on in the set someone threw a ninja headband on stage (like, from the karate kid) and gerard got really excited. he put it around mikey's head, then it fell around his neck. gerard eventually put it around his own neck.
-at one point someone threw a shoe on stage, and gerard told them to keep their shoes because he's got enough shoes for everyone.
-he also sang home on the range lol, and before hang 'em high told us their next cd would be full of cowboy songs and that we're all cowboys and cowgirls.
-he called us motherfuckers a lot. beautiful ones, even.
-two gerard quotes that i enjoyed: "how can you make friends with your face blown off?" and "i'm too young and pretty to die."

after the show, i met up with limmenel outside in the line to meet frank. we were pretty close to the front. some girls were handing out things to be signed, including the black parade valentines haha. i gave frank my ticket to sign (it got wet so it's kind of smeared. plus the picture's blurry), and i told him that they were amazing. he said we were amazing, and then i said that it was my first time seeing them. he was like, oh wow, really? you should come to the show tomorrow. i was like, i am actually haha. then i thanked him and asked if i could give him a hug. he was like, yeah, sure! so i hugged him :D i didn't feel awkward being taller than him like i thought i would. i took a picture of him while limmenel was getting an autograph, but the flash wasn't on so it didn't come out D: i'm posting it anyway. i also took a picture after i got my ticket signed. it's not great, but here it is:

:D

EDIT:

(click for huuugeness) OMG!! thanks again, limmenel! i forgot he was smoking then, heh.

i also took a picture of the marquee:

it looks crappy, but the place was really nice inside.

after stopping at walgreens for some water, limmenel and i parted ways and i went back to the hotel and wrote down everything i could remember about the show.

day two! i got a later start and didn't get to the train station till after 1pm. when we got off, this guy on the shuttle to the station asked if he could follow me in since he'd never been to chicago before. i didn't mind, and we ended up chatting the whole way in and sat next to each other on the train and chatted like, the whole way into the city. it was crazy; i'm normally really shy and don't have long conversations with people i don't know. he asked if i wanted to get lunch with him; i was hesitant but he said he had an expense account and he'd pay (he was in from la on business; his eight hour seminar turned into a two hour seminar so he had a bunch of free time till he met up with friends later) so i agreed. he wanted a steak, so we found this nice place on michigan avenue (the gage, i think. i felt kind of bad, bc it was a nice restaurant and i was wearing my mikey fuckin way shirt. i tried to keep my hair in front of the bad part, haha) and he got a steak and i got a cheeseburger (classy as always). whatever, it was a fucking awesome cheeseburger. during the conversation i found out he was 33 (i had no idea he was that old; i would've said 28 at the most) and had a girlfriend. at one point he asked why i didn't have a boyfriend (haaa), and what it was about mcr that i loved so much. i told him it wasn't just the music, but their message and what they stand for. he asked specifically what, and i tried to explain it to him but i felt kind of cheesy saying it out loud, heh. after we finished eating, it was already after 3:30 so i headed to the venue and he went to the art institute (which was where i was originally planning on going). it was weird (but not in a bad way) that we got along so well; i think it was because i knew i wouldn't see him again so there wasn't any pressure, like it didn't matter to me whether he liked me or not.

i got to the venue around 4:30 and was farther back in line than the day before, but there ended up being less people than the day before. i did not have my hoodie with me this time (i did the night before, and even with maintaining a death grip it was still difficult to hold onto it), and thankfully it was a lot warmer so i didn't need it. i snuck my camera in again but didn't take any pictures bc the security guys were coming into the pit and taking people's camera batteries and i didn't want to risk it. i bought the mcr fingerless gloves (they're awesome, okay?) and a skeleton crew t-shirt (it's a bit too short D:). this time there was no pushing at all until after david costa came out; an improvement already! the crowd was much more into both him and drive by this night, and it got insane for billy talent. the sideways pushing started again, and i actually fell down this time. i was worried it'd be a repeat of the night before, but it calmed down a bit after mcr came out.

i started off right in front of mikey but after a few songs found myself in front of ray. i couldn't really see him (there were some tall people there!), but i had a really nice view of gerard. i enjoyed this show more than the previous one. idk if the pit really was better or if i'd just gotten used to it, but i was able to breathe relatively easily and had a better view and wasn't being shoved quite as much. i had a lot of fun jumping and dancing, although it was kind of awkward trying to dance when you're pressed flush against the person in front of/behind you. despite all this (and the numerous bruises i incurred and the all around soreness), i had a fucking fantastic time, it was so fucking worth it. i can't accurately describe to you how awesome it is seeing them on stage; they put on a kickass show. gerard's my favorite person to watch, he's never not entertaining. it's just, they mean so much to me, and getting to see them in concert is such an incredible feeling ♥

and now, the setlist (i'm almost positive this is the right order; there are just a few i'm not sure of):
thank you for the venom :D
the sharpest lives
heaven help us
dead!
hang 'em high
welcome to the black parade
i don't love you
this is how i disappear
you know what they do to guys like us in prison
mama
give 'em hell kid
teenagers
headfirst for halos
house of wolves
sleep
helena (i thought it was funny that on thursday gerard said this is the song they'd end with that night and the next night and at their last show ever, and then on friday they...didn't end with it ha.)
cancer
DESERT SONG
i'm not okay (i promise)
famous last words

random tidbits:
-while waiting for gerard to come back out after cancer, james was playing the beginning of desert song. i tried not to get my hopes up, in case he was just playing it for some reason. but then gerard came out and asked if anyone had seen their dvd and i knew he was going to sing it. i yelled OMG and got really excited. and then almost cried, again.
-right after the first song i believe, someone threw a stuffed unicorn on stage. gerard got really excited again and was like, "mikey's favorite, fucking unicorn! mikey's fucking favorite." :D
-someone later on threw a pillow on stage (wtf) and gerard was like, a pillow? and i think he said thank you, haha.
-at a couple points throughout the show gerard and ray had a conversation. idk, i like seeing them interacting.
-gerard made the most ridiculous faces when he would tell us to sing something back at him, it was hilarious :D
-during ray's solo for dead, frank came over and stared at him. afterwards they smiled at each other and frank went back to the other side of the stage <3
-at one point frank had on a cowboy hat. gerard told him to take it off i think? but frank didn't until later on.
-gerard did his jazz hands at various times, and at the end of one song he held his arms straight up and did it, and he even told us to do jazz hands lol.
-both nights gerard conducted us for the first part of welcome to the black parade.
-i was surprised by how powerful sleep sounded live. it's not one of my favorites but it sounded amazing.

this show started a lot later than the first one, and i'm pretty sure we got out about an hour later. i waited in line to see frank again, but after a while the security guards told us no one was coming out because it was past curfew for chicago. those of us who were over eighteen were pretty annoyed, but oh well. at least i got to meet him once! i eventually returned to the hotel and flew home today (after a two hour flight delay D:).

wow, that was probably tl;dr. i got a bit carried away, haha. but i wanted to get down all the details possible, to relive it later on or something. to sum up: best concert(s) ever!

EDIT: some pretty cool pics here.

BOB DYLAN OMGGGGGGG. i hope someone else remembers because gjkdfhgjsgs. if it was positively 4th street i may DIE OF JOY AND JEALOUSY.

frank's nike's make me LOL so hard for some reason ahahahahahahahahah. god. was he easier to talk to than gale? whose hug was better? DEETS PLS.

LIVIIIIIIING AND VAMPIRES AND PRISON MY GOD. also dude, i'd kinda love to be at a show where they close with FLW. for some reason it seems like a great closing song? at least way better than cancer :x

i wish i could remember! i know bob dylan but i wasn't familiar with that song. i think gerard even said the name of it but i really don't remember D:

inorite? i did not notice them until i saw the picture, ahaha. he was easier to talk to than gale. i mean, with gale, i could barely speak to him the first time, and it took me till the third time to ask for a hug, ha. but with frank, i was nervous in line waiting, but when i went to speak to him i was totally fine. idk if i was feeling high from the concert, or if he's just less intimidating or what, but it was easy to say what i said (WE HAD SOME CLEVER BANTER, LET ME TELL YOU :P). i'd have to say frank's was better. it was face to face, and we both used both arms and everything :D his voice sounded kind of scratchy, i assume from all the screaming he'd done. oh! and sometimes he'd sing along with gerard, not in the microphone, but just singing. it made me so happy!

I FELT LIKE I'D CREATED THE SETLIST MYSELF. oh, it was definitely an awesome way to end the night! i was kind of tired during the opening bands but was pumped all through my chem's set. everyone was jumping up and down during the chours, and that's my favorite song off tbp so yeah, it was pretty perfect :D

Oh, man, your review is freaking amazing... how do you remember all of these little moments, like the set list? Anyways, thanks so much for posting this, you mind if I link to it in my LJ? Your review is much better than mine.

Also, I have pics to upload when I get back to Canada tomorrow, though none very good, but I think I have one of you and Frank together!

thanks! haha, i go over them in my head during the concert. every time they finished a song, i'd go back over the order so i could remember. and i don't mind at all!

omg, really? that'd be awesome! either way, i'm looking forward to seeing your pictures :)

Wow. I think the most surprising part for me was you eating lunch with a perfect stranger. I would have been scared for my life and ran away. xDD
But it sounds like you had an amazing time, and I'm overall very jealous. Chicago is still on my "List of Places To See Before I Die."
:D

haha, it was strange for me! i don't ever do things like that. but we were in a really public place, and i wasn't going anywhere private with him, plus he offered to pay so i figured, why not?

i did i did! you definitely need to visit chicago. i've been there a bunch of times, it's awesome. i'd love to live there someday :D

yeah, i went to nyc a couple of weeks ago. a nice place to VISIT. would never be able to live there. xD
i rly missed my small town. xD

From: [identity profile] erraticonstilts.livejournal.com
ha, i'm tired of living in a small town, and i'd like to live in a big city at least for a few years, just to get the experience. and there's always stuff going on in chicago, concert and otherwise, and it'd be nice not to have to travel to do fun stuff, heh.

i was petrified i was going to be trampled, or pass out. or almost pass out and have to be crowd surfed to the front. i REFUSE to crowd surf. when people stopped being douches and trying to push their way to the front, it got a lot better.

REMEMBER THAT TIME I GOT CANCER? THAT WAS TOPS! but seriously, nothing compares to seeing your favorite band in concert :D

i do too! seeing it totally made my week :D you're going to have so much fun! i've been looking through your lj, and i had no idea you've seen them so many times in concert. at the concert yesterday i wasn't sure how big of a fan of them you were (i mean, i figured pretty big since you're going to alabama and all, BUT STILL), so i didn't want to come across all crazy and be all MCR MCR! while we're at a panic concert haha. so yeah, anyway. i'm excited for you!

LOL yeah they are my favorite band :] Thats why when you mentioned about the chicago shows at the signing I was like O_O mcr!<3 hahah

haha okay, that's what i figured. i just felt kind of bad being more excited about having seen mcr in concert than i was about seeing panic that night, heh. and as much as i enjoyed the concert, for me, no one compares to mcr ♥
